11th Update Course in Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery for operating room nurses

As in previous years, the Spanish Traumatology and Orthopaedic Nursing Association AEETO (Asociación Española de Enfermería en Traumatología y Ortopedia) has organised the 11th Update Course for scrub nurses in Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery. It will be from 21st to 23rd of October 2015 in Clínica Cemtro.

The technology in the Operating Room of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery changes and advances quickly. This requires updating in theorical and practical knowledge.
Even nursing staff with extensive experience in the surgical area of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Surgery, need to update their knowledge and skills.

This course seeks to present techniques, implants and skills that are increasingly being imposed in our operating rooms.  This course covers the high demand for training in Operating Room Nursing.

During this course the participants will be able to learn about:
  •        Kyphoplasty
  •        Limb replantation
  •       Custom prosthesis (hip and knee)
  •    Chondrocyte culture
  •        Knee prosthesis with navigator


The Spanish Traumatology and Orthopaedic Nursing Association AEETO looks to update knowledge among professionals with its continuing education program.

Elena Miguel is author of a chapter in the book “Cuidados al paciente con alteraciones traumatológicas y ortopédicas”




Elena Miguel is author of Chapter 21 of the book “Cuidados al paciente con alteraciones traumatológicas y ortopédicas” (Care for patients with Traumatology and Orthopaedic injuries) published in 2011.

This chapter is “Lesiones nerviosas por compresión” (Nerve injuries by compression). We can see the different aetiology and levels of these kinds of injuries. The two more frequent syndromes are described: Carpal tunnel syndrome (at the wrist) and Tarsal tunnel syndrome (at the ankle). Descriptions of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment in both injuries are included.

The nursing care is directed to both a conservative treatment and perioperative time giving importance to health education for the patient and their family.

Elena Miguel Poza has been named the Chairperson of the Principles in Operative Fracture Management for ORP AO Trauma Course. This course will be held on 26-27 February 2014 in Madrid.

The goal of this course is to teach perioperative handlings related to fundamental principles and latest techniques in the treatment of operative fracture management.

This course is targeted at operating room personnel in surgical practice in trauma and orthopaedic surgery, particularly those who have just started their professional career. It also addresses those who are interested in deepening their current knowledge and skills.

The AO Trauma ORP Course will include different activities:
  • ·      Lectures
  • ·      Practical Exercises
  • ·      Discussion groups

The course will provide several evidence-based lectures, which cover the key information required. In practical exercises, participants will be trained in the application of fixation techniques and familiarization with the instrumentation. And discussions in small groups help participants to understand the decision-making process in fracture management and the importance of appropriate nursing preparations.

The AO Trauma ORP Course will be organized together with the Principles Course for surgeons and participants of both courses will use the same rooms and material in practical exercises and they will also share the same discussion group rooms. Currently Elena Miguel is working together with surgeon course chairpersons to agree on the timing for practical exercises and discussion groups.
